実際に受験英語の世界でも It is impossible to know ~ の意味！と習う項目です。

ただ、授業で以下のような英文和訳を扱うなか、
There is no telling how far science may have progressed by the end of this century.
「今世紀の終わりまでに科学がどこまで進歩しているか、誰にも分らない。」

そういえば、There is no tellingの後って疑問詞が続くことが多いよな・・・。続かないケースもあったっけ？と感じられ、実際に生成AIで検証してみました。

1. There is no telling what the future holds, so it’s important to be prepared for anything.
和訳: 将来が何をもたらすかはわかりませんので、何にでも備えておくことが重要です。
2. There is no telling how long the traffic jam will last, so we might be delayed getting there.
和訳: 交通渋滞がいつまで続くかはわかりませんので、そこに到着するのが遅れるかもしれません。
3. There is no telling what kind of opportunities await us if we step out of our comfort zone.
和訳: 快適なゾーンを出ると、どのような機会が待っているかはわかりません。
4. There is no telling whether the experiment will succeed or not until we get the results.
和訳: 実験が成功するかどうかは、結果が出るまでわかりません。
5. There is no telling who might show up at the party tonight; it could be a surprise guest.
和訳: 今夜のパーティーに誰が現れるかはわかりません。驚きのゲストかもしれません。

結果的にはことごとく疑問詞が続くパターンのみ列挙されていきました。（受験向け参考書では目にしないような用例も出てくるので、活きた表現として参考になります。）どうやら、There is no telling の後には疑問詞が続くのが傾向的に強いコロケーションのようですね。

There is no telling w/h — は「不確実性」や「予測不可能な出来事」を表すので、現実社会で起こっている予測不能なことについて述べる際にも使えそうです。

たとえば
There is no telling when the war between Russia and Ukraine will end.
とか、
There is no telling how many crowns Shohei Ohtani will ultimately finish the season with.
とか。
